About Motorcycles

time2010/08/09

A motorcycle, which is also sometimes referred to as a motorbike, is a type of vehicle that has two wheels and is powered by an engine. Its single-track design allows it to be the narrowest type of motorized vehicle and also gives it great agility and maneuverability on the roadways. Due to their low-fuel consumption, motorcycles have become more popular in recent years in a direct correlation with rising gas prices.
History
The first motorcycle was invented in Germany in 1885. However, they were not available for purchase until 1894 and were not mass-produced until 1920. By the mid-1930s, motorcycles were becoming a relatively common form of transportation.
Time Frame
While the first motorcycle was essentially a motorized bike, newer designs throughout the early part of the 20th century were built around internal combustion engines. These engines were very similar to the ones used in automobiles. In the 1950s, producing lightweight and aerodynamic motorcycles became much more important with the popularity of motorcycle racing. Modern-day motorcycles use many of the technological advances that were used first during race events.
Types
The three main types of motorcycles are street, off-road and dual-purpose. Examples of street motorcycles include sports bikes, choppers, mopeds and scooters. Off-road motorbikes are used in racing and can handle hazardous terrains. Dual-purpose motorcycles combine both aspects and are popular among enthusiasts. Dozens of motorcycle manufacturers exist with each making many different models.
Features
Almost all motorcycles share a number of features. The outer casing of a motorcycle is called a fairing and is usually made of either fiberglass or plastic. A windscreen helps keep elements away from the rider and makes the bike more aerodynamic. Two hand grips are used to help control the speed and direction, while a motorcycle usually has one or two seats. Customization is an important aspect in the motorcycle industry, allowing identically-produced motorcycles to end up completely different.
Warning
Without safety equipment such as a helmet, motorcycles can be very dangerous. However, even with proper equipment, motorcycles are inherently more dangerous than automobiles because the rider is exposed. A motorcycle accident results in a fatality 28 times more often than a car accidents does. DMVs in most states offer or can refer you to special safety driving courses for motorcyclists. Consult your local DMV for more details on how to register for these classes.
